2005 was another boom year for mobile devices. Global shipments of mobile phone handsets topped 800 million units, a 17% year-over-year growth based on Parks Associates' estimates. In addition, 3G finally became a global phenomenon in 2005, with a spurt of new subscriber addition in Western Europe and North America. According to 3GToday.com, worldwide 3G subscribers exceeded 230 million in 2005, or 12% of total global mobile subscribers. Operators are ready to capitalize on 3G services to recoup their investments in mobile infrastructure, increase ARPU, and differentiate from competitors. The same motivation drives mobile handset makers, which are counting on new-generation mobile devices to stabilize the deteriorating handset pricing environment and edge out their competition.
