In the frame of the development of the XML protocol MRML (the Multimedia Retrieval Markup Language), the paper has created a new flexible framework that facilitates the development of XML protocols by allowing the evolution of the specification and implementation at different paces. This paper presents this framework in a generic setup and its application to the development of the MRML protocol, elsewhere specified.
