Millions of Americans that use broadband communication such as DSL, cable modem, or satellite broadband to access the Internet, are at risk from hackers, which can gain unauthorized access to their computing resources using malicious programs such as viruses and spyware. Broadband communication, or high speed dedicated connections to the Internet, allows the computer to be "Always" connected to the Internet, which significantly increases the risk of an attack. Fortunately, many of these vulnerabilities can be prevented if the computer is properly equipped with the installation of the following basic types of security software programs: firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, and intrusion detection systems. These types of security software programs can create a line of defense that makes it harder for intruders to compromise the computer.
