Storage networks have now become so pervasive, and their configurations so extensive that it is somewhat difficult to remember their rather humble beginnings as loops of fewer than 100 devices. These difficulties caused several members of the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) to meet in private session in 2000 to discuss ways to obviate this bottleneck. The Storage Management Initiative (SMI) that resulted has leveraged the existing work of the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) to define a single interface sufficiently rich and extensible to support all of the management functions required in a storage network. The interface also maximizes the commonality of the information reported and the controls supported.
