This paper provides a primer on both SNIA's Storage Management Initiative (SMI) and the technology on which it is based, the Distributed Management Task Force's Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM). The primer begins with a historical timeline of developments in the two organizations, followed by exploration of the fundamentals of WBEM and the extensions defined by SMI. A set of "Structured" terminology definitions is contained in this paper as a complement to the earlier definitions.
