To be prepared for the future, it's essential to have a detailed understanding of the past. That's precisely the challenge facing ASTRON, the Netherlands Foundation for Research in Astronomy. The institute wanted to continue its pioneering work in astronomic research through local, national and international projects. As a solution Nortel supplied an actively resilient data infrastructure based on Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 8600s and Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5520s. Gigabit connectivity was provided to a remote radio telescope using Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5510s and Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 5530s. The Nortel Communication Server 1000 provides IP telephony, and secure Voice over WLAN was achieved with the Nortel WLAN 2300 solution and Nortel WLAN Handset 2210s and 2211s.
