Several studies have quantified the market share, penetration and relative strength of both Windows and Linux platforms within the Small and Midsize Business (SMB) market segment. Despite the fact that Linux has emerged in several segments, these studies have shown that Windows continues to dominate the SMB market outselling Linux over five to one. Additionally, much effort has been put forth to quantify how decision makers evaluate both platforms based on IT performance metrics, such as workload capacity, memory management and uptime. Of course, many of these metrics are critical for understanding a platform's direct impact on operations, customer service and support.
