This paper designs a LCD control panel based on a Hitachi HD44780 LCD display and the AT90S4433 AVR 8?Bit RISC Microcontroller from Atmel. Both components very common and not expensive. The control panel includes a watchdog to supervise the computer and has two buttons to allow for a dialog with the user. One can set IP address, netmask, gateway address, shutdown the computer, readout statistics, basically anything it want because most of the logic is implemented with a perl script and it can be changed easily. The panel is connected to the computer via RS232 serial line.
