Oracle Clusterware and Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) software version 10g Release 2 Patchset 2 (10.2.0.3) provide the infrastructure that enables high availability for end-user applications. The goal of this paper is to describe best practices that optimize the availability of applications supported by Oracle Clusterware and Oracle RAC during unplanned outages. This paper explains best practices and illustrates the benefits through sample applications, with typical application service level objectives. A breakdown of components impacting availability is provided both with and without implementing the best practices. Availability of components is documented at both the server and client levels. Client level availability is measured against the defined service level objectives to understand true application service level impact.
