Cluster computing is the natural outcome of an evolution of distributed computing technology that has been in process for more than a decade. High-Performance Computing (HPC) clusters provide a mechanism for solving problems that cannot be solved without massive amounts of computing power, and they incorporate not only servers, storage, networks, and interconnect mechanisms, but also the software to manage and distribute workloads across the cluster infrastructure. This is a style of computing in which systems are pooled and managed as a common resource which is then shared for increased efficiency. It is a way to optimize the throughput of workloads across the cluster infrastructure and provide access to computing resources that were previously unavailable.
