N Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) is an industry-standard Fibre Channel (FC) protocol that provides a means to assign multiple FC addresses on the same physical link. HP is the first vendor to offer an NPIV-based FC interconnects option for blade servers with HP BladeSystem c-Class, the latest HP BladeSystem architecture. This paper describes this technology, different FC implementations that work with c-Class enclosures, and use cases for each implementation, and identifies and contrasts the benefits of each implementation. In addition, this paper also discusses non-NPIV solutions from HP and use cases for those implementations.
