Supercomputing architectures require different approaches to storage selection, configuration and tuning to meet the stringent performance, scalability, availability, and manageability requirements of supercomputing applications, users, workloads and data sets. Well-tuned storage has an integral impact on how well supercomputers perform. Within the storage configurations, critical elements including storage hardware, the I/O middleware and the file systems themselves must be selected and tuned to meet the unique needs of each supercomputer.
