As a consequence of Bulgaria's military reforms and plans, the country is downsizing its army by over 60% (from 107,000 to 40,000) over a five-year period. Those who lose their jobs as a result face an uncertain future on leaving the army, since their skills are not always obviously applicable to civilian life. Even for personnel with an IT background, it is not straightforward to resume what was often a highly fulfilling career. Four of Bulgaria's former military officers have solved this problem by setting up a brand-new Cisco Networking Academy, the Intelekti, in the picturesque old town of Veliko Turnovo. All four therefore attended the IT Essentials and CCNA courses - including instructor training - at American University in Bulgaria (AUBG).
