As Exelon Corporation's infrastructure grew through mergers and acquisitions, so too did its test and development environment to support duplicate domain and management systems. To help reduce hardware and labor costs while maintaining its stringent testing standards, Exelon decided to implement virtual machines in the test and development environment using Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The company was able to provision multiple virtual machines - each with its own domain name and IP address - on a single physical server. In addition to achieving a server consolidation ratio in the lab of at least 4:1, Exelon attained a 50 percent reduction in server provisioning time and a more consistent test environment.
