This paper presents the steps for delivering block storage over an existing IP infrastructure. A number of "Proof of concept" IP SAN deployment scenarios are described, including a basic configuration, backup, and clustering, as well as more advanced configurations such as bridge to Fibre Channel SAN and iSCSI boot from SAN. This paper is designed for system administrators who work in small and medium-sized organizations and who are exploring the ways in which iSCSI SANs can benefit their organizations, without having to invest in a complete Fibre Channel infrastructure. System administrators in large organizations may also be interested in this paper, if they have previously deployed a Fibre Channel solution. They may find that iSCSI provides an additional storage solution for many scenarios.
