The goal of a scalable application is to achieve linear scaling; if two identical computers configured for an application can service 20,000 users, adding a third identical computer should enable the application to service an additional 10,000 users. Because person designs the application to scale by adding additional computers, this is known as scaleout. While linear scaling is generally impossible, the goal of scaleout is to come as close as possible to the ideal. One can also service additional users by upgrading to a more powerful computer. This is known as scaleup. This white paper describes planning guidelines and administration tasks to consider when implementing a scaleout solution with SQL Server 2005.
