A Protocol Reference Model for Next-Generation Networks

PublisherCisco Systems

This paper describes a generic protocol "Reference model" for the Next-Generation Network (NGN) functional architecture that clarifies the relationship of the proposed protocols to the NGN functional blocks. It also discusses the relationship between the control and management capabilities, and seeks to clarify the distinctions between them, where appropriate. It is intended that such an NGN Protocol Reference Model (PRM) can be used in conjunction with the NGN FRamework Architecture (FRA) model to get a better understanding of the NGN, analogous to the way protocol reference models were an integral part of the description of existing ISDN-/BISN- and cable-based networks.
