This paper is designed both for users who are new to the SAS Macro language and experienced users who are seeking efficient debugging techniques. The paper describes both HOW TO debug a SAS Macro, and some actual bugs that people often trip over when working in the MACRO language. The paper provides a review of the various SAS SYSTEM OPTIONS that one might want to use to debug a MACRO. This is followed by several examples of problems routinely encountered in the MACRO language, and techniques for identifying and fixing those problems.
