The methods used to gain remote access into your organization's network and manage IP address management for remote access can impact the implementation of Active Directory and should therefore be carefully considered in your network infrastructure design. In this sample chapter from How to Cheat at Designing a Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure, investigate remote access and IP address management as they apply to the Active Directory and to security. Start with a discussion of remote access, the available methods, and the locations from which remote access must be provided. Explore the implications of an RAS deployment with respect to Active Directory, the policies that are available for uses as well as the machines, the chosen authentication strategy, and how it is to be implemented. Then, study IP address management and the use of DHCP, including how IP addresses and subnets should be mapped to DHCP scopes (and/or superscopes), which are then used to assign IP address and configuration data to clients on the associated subnet. End with a review of best practices for DHCP placement and failover and redundancy strategies, as well as the integration of DHCP with DNS.
