VERITAS Software commissioned VeriTest to benchmark both backup and restore performance, comparing disk, tape, and tape multiplexing solutions. VERITAS Backup Exec 10 for Windows Servers was tested with disk and tape, and Computer Associates ARCserve 11.1 was tested with disk, tape, and tape multiplexing. The project set out to determine if performance advantage could be derived from disk, tape, or multiplexed tape backup and restore technologies. The results indicate that disk based backups executed faster than the same backups executed to tape, multiplexed to tape. Further, restore operations from disk executed faster than the same restores performed from tape, or multiplexed tape.
