This paper documents representative test results detailing the performance characteristics of SpeechWorks speech recognition software from ScanSoft running on systems based on Intel NetStructure Host Media Processing Software. Test findings demonstrate that the use of host media processing consumes only an incremental amount of CPU resources when compared to board-based, telephony-specific Digital Signal Processors (DSPs), freeing CPU resources for speech applications. The paper, together with its companion document, "Performance Characteristics for Speech Applications: SpeechWorks Software on Intel Telephony Servers," highlights the breadth of robust hardware and software options available today from Intel for building speech-based applications.
