IT departments implement an IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Configuration Management DataBase (CMDB) practice for many reasons and in various ways. IT departments need to understand their choices and how to evaluate implementations. A CMDB practice can elevate IT to a vital corporate contributor role, or it can leave IT as a barely tolerated cost center. The right choice of implementation will determine a good or bad outcome. The Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) unique implementation, the MDB (Management DataBase), has advantages over many other possible implementations. However, because the definition and value of a CMDB has been significantly misunderstood, the advantages of the CA implementation are largely unknown. This paper will clarify those issues.
