Microsoft .NET Passport operates where consumers who use the Internet meet companies that do business online. At that juncture, many consumers want a convenient way to establish their identity so they can move smoothly among various Web sites while maintaining control over their private information. At the same time, businesses want a way to confirm the consumer's identity and also acquire enough information to offer their customers a rich user experience. Passport is designed to provide many benefits to both consumers and businesses. This paper provides a brief update about Microsoft's plans for the future of Passport, and to set the record straight with regard to confusion that has developed around Passport and authentication systems in general.
