The West Virginia Library Commission, located in Charleston, West Virginia, distributes grants and creates library programs across the state. The financially challenged commission has a small IT department that maintains nearly 2,000 PCs. Most of the computers are shared-access public PCs, used by library patrons for research, e-mail, and browsing the Web. Many of these PCs are susceptible to tampering and other security challenges. As a result, commission IT employees have had to travel throughout the state to fix these problems. Because the commission wanted a cost-effective tool that would provide better security and management, it installed the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP. The Toolkit offers better PC protection and reduces the number of IT support calls and travel costs.
