The Student Loans Company was set up in 1990 by the U.K. government to administer the granting and repaying of student loans in England and Wales. The company wanted to centralize and Web enable student loan processing to ensure service consistency throughout England and Wales. The challenge was to enable students to apply for and repay loans online while cutting response times and reducing operating costs and build a scalable solution that can handle rising customer numbers and enable Student Loans Company to extend its service to students in Northern Ireland. The company used Oracle Database to create a single, lifetime record for each customer and built online student portal using Oracle Application Server 10g that handles 700,000 transactions each day.
