Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP contain an implementation of the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) that adheres to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Request For Comments (RFC) 2284. Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP use EAP for wireless connections that authenticate with the IEEE 802.1 X standards and for Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)-based connections such as dial-up or Virtual Private Network (VPN)-based remote access or site-to-site connections. Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP include an IEEE 802.1X supplicant and a PPP supplicant. The new EAPHost architecture in Microsoft Windows Server "Longhorn" (in beta testing) and Windows Vista (in beta testing) provides third-party vendors with new extensibility opportunities to more quickly and easily develop and distribute EAP authentication methods and EAP-based supplicants.
