The successful deployment of new triple-play services very much depends on the choice of infrastructure. Carriers who have built triple-play networks using DSL for subscriber access, ATM for DSLAM aggregation, and IP for Internet access are increasingly running into problems. These problems include DSLAM bandwidth limitations and ATM scalability as the number of subscribers grows. Consequently, carriers are rapidly changing their network infrastructure, migrating to IP DSLAMs instead of ATM DSLAMs and using Gigabit Ethernet for DSL aggregation instead of ATM. True Carrier Ethernet networks require MPLS-based Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) to provide carrier attributes such as scalability, reliability, and traffic engineering that Ethernet alone cannot offer.
