Long term (post-2012, say), satellite operators anticipate a market for broadband multimedia services via satellite, providing that satellite services are cost-effective and flexible. The market will require two types of service: an "Access/edge" type for connecting to the Internet; and a "Backbone" type for strengthening the communication infrastructures of service providers. Both types of service will require innovative payload architectures that will only be realized by new technologies. Of these - mostly borrowed from terrestrial communications - optics, microwave photonics, digital processing and cryogenics are of special interest for future multimedia satellites. Alcatel Alenia Space is researching the inclusion of these technologies in future payloads.
