The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is the focus of considerable attention in the industry today. This is because it represents an important value proposition for both mobile and fixed operators. Alcatel has recognized this value and as a result provides an end-to-end IMS solution for both mobile and fixed network environments. However, what is not sufficiently emphasized is that some key components are needed for successful deployment of IMS on fixed access networks. Quality-of-Service (QoS) control and policy management are two vital functions. This white paper describes the pre-requisites for IMS deployment on fixed access networks (xDSL, FTTx). The architecture presented is designed to fulfill the IMS QoS requirements by putting guaranteed QoS control and policy management in place in the network.
