More than 300 branches of the Wimpy fast-food chain feed daily sales information back to the company head office for analysis. The data is used to track the popularity of specials, follow changes in customer requirements, and generally monitor the health of a far-flung operation. The custom legacy application that was used to feed incoming e-mail into a database, however, was not only slow but also prone to failure and required a great deal of maintenance. The result was a regular backlog that kept the company from quicker decision making. A new solution based on a number of Microsoft technologies has changed that, giving Wimpy access to near real-time data with much less hassle.
