The key to effective Software Asset Management (SAM) seems quite simple: "Know what you have." But there is a catch; knowing what you have depends on the processes and tools that are used to manage software assets. Software license compliance is among the most pervasive challenges facing organizations today. CIO's and IT managers are turning their attention to best practice frameworks to elevate ad hoc practices to comprehensive, process-driven SAM programs. Since its initial introduction in May 2006, the ISO/IEC 19770 standard for software asset management is attracting much of this attention, and for good reason. ISO/IEC 19770 promises to be the most comprehensive framework of its kind.
