WebCentral was looking for a way to increase revenues. The Australian service provider hosts shared and dedicated websites and complex installations for tens of thousands of small and large organizations. Many of WebCentral's small and mid-sized business customers were relying on bundled e-mail services based on POP3 technology. By offering these customers a new business-class e mail solution based on the Microsoft Solution for Hosted Exchange 2003, WebCentral could deliver a range of value-added features that were unavailable through a commodity POP3 service - including group calendaring, shared contact lists, Microsoft Outlook Web Access, Short Message Service, and remote synchronization with handheld devices.
