The University of Kentucky did not have an effective way to proactively communicate with its various communities. This was most evident in the university's inability to broadcast security alerts to its faculty and students on campus. The school deployed a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 - based solution that integrates with its existing infrastructure and sends announcements to registrants' Windows Mobile powered smartphones as well as by telephone and e-mail. What started as a conduit for security announcements has quickly grown into a promising vehicle for communications of all types and to an increasing number of university groups.
