Storage administrators are vital to IT departments because they protect and maintain a company's most valuable asset - its data. Storage administrators nowadays manage increasingly larger amounts of data. That data is being stored and subsequently managed for longer periods due to lower priced storage devices and increasing governmental compliance regulations. One of the critical roles of the storage administrator is understanding and managing DFSMShsm, more commonly known as HSM. HSM provides backup, recovery, migration, and space management functions with automation capabilities. Storage administrators can set and apply rules within HSM to manage storage environments at both the data set level and device pool level. This paper outlines some best practices for working with HSM.
