The Solaris Zones feature in the Solaris Operating System is a partitioning technology used to virtualize operating system services and provide an isolated and secure environment for hosting and running applications. A zone is a virtualized operating system environment created within a single instance of the Solaris Operating System. Two types of zone exist: global and non-global. The Solaris Zones feature provides service virtualization and namespace isolation to processes running in a non-global zone. Processes in a non-global zone are isolated from processes in other zones. This isolation prevents processes running in a non-global zone from monitoring or affecting processes running in other zones.
