Torfaen County Borough Council in Wales wanted to transform its IT infrastructure to boost efficiencies and customer services. Founded in 1996, the council inherited several disparate systems, including Novell technologies, from the previous local authorities that served its citizens. Working with Microsoft Gold Certified Partner Ultima Business Solutions, Torfaen implemented an end-to-end environment standardised on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Active Directory, directory services, and a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 database. Taking advantage of its Microsoft Enterprise Agreement (EA) volume-licensing solution, Torfaen is set to achieve extensive savings, which will be reinvested in improved front-line services. The new environment has dramatically improved IT efficiency, with administrators, for example, now free to concentrate on higher-value projects instead of routine tasks.
