Northern Europe's largest emergency care center, the Stockholm-based institution relies on powerful networked technologies to treat 90,000 emergency-room patients each year, as well as 380,000 in-patients. Several years ago, the Nimda virus struck the facility's network, forcing the hospital to confront the vulnerability of its life-saving medical services to on-line threats. To safeguard its operations, hospital administrators sought an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) able to defend against malicious traffic entering or leaving the network without restricting legitimate medical data and messaging. After carefully reviewing available technologies, the hospital selected an IPS from TippingPoint, a division of 3Com.
