Microsoft's official advice is that a person is not supposed to install Exchange on a Domain Controller. The fact remains, however, that there are a lot of Exchange DCs in use out there. Ultimately, whether the person install Exchange on a DC, or not, depends on many factors (like what else the server is expected to do); but one thing the person will have noticed if he do have an Exchange DC is that it takes a very long time to shut down or reboot. For those running Exchange 2000/2003 on a Domain Controller, this paper describes how to make sure that the Exchange services are automatically stopped before Active Directory, substantially improving shutdown/reboot time.
