Most PL/SQL developers stay very busy building applications. As a result, relatively few explore the wider world of software programming, in which the topic of refactoring is known. Refactoring is the process of changing a software system in such a way that it does not alter the external behavior of the code yet improves its internal structure. In this paper, the author will perform a refactoring exercise on a program that checks to see if two files are equal (have the same contents). By seeing the refactoring process in action, the reader will be able to better evaluate its potential impact on his or her own development environment.
