As the official overseas relief and development agency of the United States Catholic community, Catholic Relief Services-U.S. Catholic Community Bishops (CRS-USCCB) provides humanitarian assistance in over 100 countries. In fiscal year 2004, almost half of the U.S. $573 million CRS operating budget was used for emergency relief. CRS responded quickly to the devastating South Asian tsunami of 2004, but the disaster's unprecedented scale required new tools for managing the relief effort. The Tsunami Relief Portal, developed with Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, provides a Web-accessible collaboration environment for reports, schedules, personnel data, and other information needed to manage the CRS tsunami response. Benefits include fast adoption with minimal training, more-efficient program management, reduced information overload, and more-consistent public relations.
