As organizations build, deploy, and orchestrate business services using Web Services technology, it becomes apparent that a careful and comprehensive design of Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) applications is required. The most effective systematic help in this area is the rigorous application of architecture patterns focused on Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) enablement. Such patterns are especially helpful when exposing Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs). Patterns are often thought of as being merely reference tools for providing guidance to particular design problems; rather, they should be considered a component of the architectural requirements.
