Deploying Exchange servers has become both more reliable and cost intensive with the introduction of Microsoft Clustering Server and Exchange Server 2003. The additional hardware required, along with more stringent requirements for the type of hardware used, has driven up costs in the data center for procurement, deployment, and energy use. VMware virtual machines vastly reduce costs on all these fronts. With the use of VMware ESX Server, Exchange servers can be deployed with reduced hardware, on a uniform virtual platform that allows for dynamic resource allocation without compromising performance or reliability. This paper provides lab-tested guidance for implementing an enterprise messaging system using Microsoft Exchange messaging products and VMware ESX Server 2.5.
