The Hermes project is addressing the development of a generic framework to support the design and implementation of mobile, context-aware applications. The initial focus is on trails-based applications. This paper discusses the experiences with an application-led approach to framework development and presents the issues encountered to date. Remedies for the issues are proposed as a step towards enhancing the benefits of application-led ubiquitous computing research.
