In 2001 Bennet developed its e-mail system within an open-source environment. A customised Sendmail application was implemented using two clustered, mirrored servers running Red Hat's Linux system, versions 7 and 8. Microsoft Outlook was deployed as the user interface. The company soon found that the Linux-based e-mail system required costly, continuous development and coding to implement basic collaborative features required by users. The company chose to migrate its IT platform to Microsoft Windows Server 2003, running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
