NorthWest Airlines (NWA), one of the world's major carriers, needed to provide easier, more secure access to company applications for flight crews. The airline used security tokens to safeguard access to applications, but the tokens cost more than U.S.$300,000 to purchase, plus annual maintenance costs. NWA provided Web-based access to applications, but security remained cumbersome until the airline deployed Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2004. NWA also developed a server-side component to provide a single sign-on capability and use the Active Directory service to verify user identities. And NWA deployed Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access to provide managers with remote access to e-mail.
