In 2001, the American Community Survey staff at the U.S. Census Bureau began producing ranking charts and tables in order to provide reporters as well as Federal, state, and local government decision makers with a simple yet effective visual representation of comparative data on key issues across states, counties, and places. In the initial year of implementation, there were only eight ranking charts. Due to high data-user demand, the number of charts grew to nineteen in 2002. All of the charts were developed using a combination of Base SAS and the Annotate Facility located within SAS/GRAPH. The methods explored in this paper will be especially informative for those seeking to use SAS/GRAPH to meet their non-standard graphical production needs.
