The National Park Service (NPS), the largest agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, operates and protects the United States' natural resources and manages national parks, monuments, and recreation areas while educating park visitors about park safety, geography, culture, and history. Its 500 IT specialists are scattered across 388 National Park areas and eight time zones. To keep these employees trained on the latest technology while also cutting costs was a challenge for NPS managers. Focused in-person training efforts were too costly, and, consequently, IT specialists received little training. To meet these challenges, NPS used Microsoft Office Live Meeting to host a series of virtual IT conferences that helped train its IT professionals.
