Eurand, a Milan-based Italian specialised pharmaceutical company, decided to review open source solutions for its IT, having used Microsoft products and services in its offices for some years. An in-depth assessment by independent analysts showed that open source was unable to replace the functions offered by the Microsoft Office System, especially Microsoft Office Excel 2003. The assessment found that the cost of training staff on open source technology would have exceeded the amount for licensing a Microsoft package. Advised by Lario Engineering, Eurand consolidated its technology by using Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003.
