Microsoft has received reports about performance difficulties in using Excel PivotTables with Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services. The Microsoft Office development team is aware of the difficulties with OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP) performance on the client. The development team is currently exploring several possibilities for improving the situation. Microsoft cannot make any promises currently about the form that relief might take or the timeline that would be involved, but Microsoft is taking this problem very seriously. This white paper describes some of these difficulties and how one can minimize them.
