A managed spreadsheet environment effectively retains all of the benefits of using spreadsheets are personal software, but eliminates substantial amounts of risk and cost. Implementing this environment will be challenging, though, as there are only a few technology providers able to provide the capability. An even greater challenge will be convincing organizations that Shadow IT is not only a problem, but a problem that can be solved. And the greatest problem of all will be convincing those who rely on spreadsheets to do their jobs that the managed spreadsheet environment not only will not make their job more difficult, but that it is a good idea.
